Brits 2019

Unlike the Grammy’s, I religiously watch the Brit awards every year. This year was an interesting show to say the least. Presented by comedian Jack Whitehall – unsure if this was the most suitable choice – the Brits kicked off with Hugh Jackman performing from ‘The Greatest Showman’. Really Britain? It’s been over a year can we please move on from this extremely overrated and quite frankly awful musical.

Unsurprisingly George Ezra took home British Male, more of a shock was Jorja Smith winning British Female. However, I’m a big fan of her debut so I felt as though this was a deserving win.

Moving on to British Breakthrough, Tom Walker? This came as a big surprise considering he is a complete carbon copy of ‘Rag n Bone Man’ who is just as awful. This was a sad blow to the talented artists he was up against such as: Ella Mai, Mabel and Jorja Smith.

I won’t bother commenting on the international wins as this bit wasn’t even presented properly.

Not the biggest fan of Jess Glynne. However, adding H.E.R. to her performance of ‘Thursday’ was probably the saving grace of that song.

‘One Kiss’ and ‘Woman Like Me’ by Calvin Harris and Little Mix won for Best Single and Best Video respectively. This also did not come to much of a surprise. Only showing Britain’s simple taste in music. Or maybe I’m just being snobbish.

1975 winning Album of the Year almost made me turn off my television and go to bed. That is all I can say for that win of the night.

Moving on to the ‘Special Achievement Awards’ which I feel sometimes these are made up and rather unnecessary. Ed Sheeran for Global Success, yeah sure why not the guy is pretty successful. Who makes music for simpletons. Calvin Harris for British Producer of the Year definitely makes sense. However, this was never an award until this year so I feel this was definitely made up just so he can win. He is Scottish though so I can’t complain. Finally, Pink winning Global Success also came as a bit of a shock, considering this is normally won by a British person.

Let’s hope next year has better performances and perhaps more controversial moments to make it worth watching.
